Our 1969 Alcan 3070 now has Twin 150 HP 2001 Yamaha OX 66 Saltwater series two stroke outboards. I had the boat yard do the work so the cost was a bit steep $25K USD. I had the yard rig my temporary helm to save some money. She is at the slip now and I plan to set up a dual helm in the coming months (we are in Charleston S.C.). I have not done any performance testing yet. I know the boat needs to be rebalanced (she rose ~two inches at the stern with the repower - you can see she's plowing a bit in the picture) and I'll need different props. I'll be updating this thread as the project unfolds.

Cheers,

Walt

Hi Walt,

Project looks to be progressing really well. Many have considered OB power for an Alcan, but you are the first that I know of to actually accomplish it. Congratulations !

"Rebalancing" to get back to bow-up (or at least level) will be an interesting exercise.
Moving the fuel and water tanks all the way aft comes to mind, but this is "variable" weight.
A huge bank of batteries might be an interesting alternative.

I will be interested to learn how this works out . . .

Rob
