Hi Rob, all is well. The improvement was in slow straight line handling. The tabs helped in the drag into locks, especially in crosswind conditions.

Re: Design weight of alcan 290?
When we had Our Cottage we installed tabs to see if they would bring up the stern....NOT! However there was a marked improvement in slow speed handling.

Terry, thanks for the news about "Patrick's" Cottage. We were wondering how it was and if he had launched yet. Glad to hear it looks good after that awful winter. We will miss the boat as we had it for 10 years and really enjoyed our time on it.

Our Cottage-sold
Hi all, just a note to you.....we have sold Our Cottage. It will be based near Montreal next year, then Lake Champlain the following year. It has been a pleasure talking to and seeing some of you at the 2007 rendezvous. Kathy and I are leaving boating and will do some road touring from our new base ...

Rob, so far as I can remember rebuilding the door, materials were the metal rollers with ball bearings as well as springs of the diameter and gauge of the originals. At that time they were available at Home Hardware. I cut the springs to the original length with a Dremel tool. There are four of them...

Anti fouling paint
An article in Canadian Yachting suggests a hydrogen peroxide based bottom paint with no copper is available.

Kathy and I are in Florida until April. Lots of sun and fun here. Lots of water but on the Gulf coast it's not very deep so we keep our boating for up north. We're planning Canada Day for Peterborough, so far.

Now, having read all that, I may just get that copper off the bottom and apply the teflon wax I used on my last boat.....Doral Prestancia, and go with that. It worked very well and I had no growth on the hull.

Bottom Paint bad news
You are absolutely right the only antifouling paint available in Canada contains copper. Interlux's Tri-Lux II antifouling is formulated for aluminum hulls and related surfaces. It is necessary to build an epoxy barrier of 15 mils prior to the application of antifouling to an aluminum hull. Our proc...

What do all you folks use for anti fouling - bottom paint on your boats? Everything I look at has copper in it. I just found out the paint my marina uses has copper oxide.

Winterizing
Terry, we have a covered slip that the boat stays in. The marina just raises it up and puts timbers under it . Other than doing the engines, genny and plumbing,we don't do anything else except crack the windows a little bit. In 9 years, haven't had a prob except when the winterize was done by others....

Hull shape/fuel consumption
David, slow would refer to our usual mix on the Trent Severn of 6mph in the slow zones and our slow of 8mph otherwise.

Hull shape
The boat Running Free appears to have the same shape as Our Cottage. I would suggest that is the belly tank, which holds 100 gallons of water. I think it DOES contribute to more stable handling in rough water at the cost of fuel consumption, adding 1000 pounds to the boat. By the way, on our last tr...

Friendship
Our Cottage spent the weekend at Bobcaygeon lock and this old guy, Ross, come over with pictures of Friendship from 20 years ago. He picked it up in Toronto Harbour and kept it for 9 years. He absolutely loved that boat and was so excited to see a similar boat this weekend.
