Comments: We got the boat in October 2006. The original Volvo 170s had been frozen so we replaced them with the 200Ds. Converting the boat to 12 Volt so removed the Kohler Genset also frozen.
We bought her from an old fellow in New Liskeard in the fall of 2006. She was named “Dealer’s Choice” and was pretty tough on the outside but the interior was still original, minus the orange shag rugs thank God. We had her shipped overland to Britt north of Parry Sound in the fall of 2006. That’s when the “fun” began. I asked the guys at Wright’s Marina to winterize the two Volvo 170s which had run pretty well when we purchased her but in reality had been taking water into the oil some where. The Kohler genset had not been tested and just filled with water when they tried to winterize it. I had access to a couple of Volvo 200D V8’s here in Bayfield so worked a deal which included a pair of 290 outdrives. I instructed the guys at Wright’s to start pull out all of the old motors and drives as they had time in the fall. By the end of July this year we had the mechanical part of the job done along with new fuel tanks. The wiring on the 170s was a bit different than the newer 200Ds but we kept at it and after comparing wiring diagrams from the Volvo web site got her running again. As “Dealer’s Choice ” she had been a light blue grey with red or orange striping. I spent about a week on the wrong end of an eight inch grinder getting rid of most of the old paint and followed up with two coats of epoxy primer and three coats of white. I guess she was originally dark blue but we have always had white boats so white it is. I added a black bottom and black cove stripe as accents.
As the summer went on we removed the 110 volt Fridge and stove. We added a dual set of golf cart batteries, Xantrex battery charger, 12 volt NovaKool Fridge and started the install of a new propane range. The propane will be up and running next year. Also added a new roof over the upper cabin and we are in the process of replacing the roof on the main cabin. Sure wish the super structure had been better maintained as it does need a fair bit of work which is probably expected from a 35 year old plywood structure. We are retired and spent most of the summer at the dock in Britt working on the boat and making new friends. The work will continue in 2008 but more time will be spent away from the dock once we launch.
The pictures are of the original boat “Dealer’s Choice” 2006 and BFB as she has evolved.
